How do people cope when emotions feel unbearable? Self-harm, such as cutting or burning, is one way some individuals try to manage their emotional pain. While self-harm isn’t always linked to a mental disorder, it’s a sign that someone is struggling to cope with difficult emotions.
Teens are especially vulnerable, with 2 in 10 reporting self-harm at least once. Many hide their wounds, making it difficult for loved ones to recognize what’s going on. If you notice someone close to you wearing inappropriate clothing to cover injuries or using bandages frequently, approach the situation with care and offer support.
